12.02.2024The process of competitive regionalization currently going on in the Asia-Pacific region

Prof. Dr. Patrick Ziltener, who teaches as Privatdozent at SUZ, is close to completing 3 months as a visiting researcher at BRIN in Jakarta (Indonesia's National Research & innovation Agency), where he conducted interviews with government officials and business representatives on how it became possible for the Regional Comprehensive Econo­mic Partnership (RCEP) - based on and led by ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations - to develop into the largest free trade zone in the world.

Since some ASEAN countries are also member of the CPTPP, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement with several North and South American countries,  Ziltener, an expert on Regional Integration in East Asia, is asking what this means for business in the region.

Companies will be able to choose from different sets of rules and standards. How will this influence the practical utilization of trade agreements? This will be a topic of future research.

Ziltener's findings will be published in an upcoming paper titled «East Asia Integrating or Fragmenting? The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) from an ASEAN-centred Perspective»

On February 1, 2024, Patrick Ziltener gave a closing speech at BRIN presenting his findings, together with the discussants Dr. Salim, Prof. Erwidodo, and Dr. Hermawan. 

Patrick Ziltener is expected back at our Department starting February 19th, where he will spend a semester lecturing on the topic of Maritime Sociology. 

In its essence, the lecture will examine the diverse significance of the world's oceans for society from a multidisciplinary standpoint. It addresses the variety of sea-based human lifestyles, the historical development of world trade and overseas colonialism, the transition from legal vacuums to modern maritime law, the importance of the oceans for modern globalization, and their role for the survival of humanity.
