Maila Mertens is a postdoctoral researcher at the Data Centre of the University Research Priority Program Human Reproduction Reloaded at the University of Zurich. She studied Sociology and American Studies at the bachelor’s level at the University of Hamburg and completed a master’s degree in Sociology at the University of Konstanz. She received her PhD in 2025 from the Department of Sociology at the University of Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jörg Rössel. Her dissertation examined public acceptance of medically assisted reproduction, with a particular focus on gender dynamics. Her research interests include social inequality, especially gender inequality, as well as medical sociology. Her current research focuses on the societal implications of medically assisted reproduction, with increasing attention to the social handling of infertility, particularly male infertility.
