New study: «The socio-organisational embeddedness of work-life mobility» by Per Block and Jan O. Jonsson

The next job in individuals’ careers is not so much determined by their concrete skills or abstract human capital – but by who they know and the type and industry of their current workplace. A recent study by Per Block (Zurich) and Jan O. Jonsson (Oxford) suggests that social networks and job ladders within and between organisations provide the opportunities needed for job mobility – and that these are more powerful than classical explanations, such as social class or skills.
