Module Booking and Assessments

Booking of Modules

All courses that you wish to attend and earn ECTS credits for must be booked online via the Booking Modules webpage.

Information on booking and cancellation deadlines is available here.

Please note that written registration forms distributed in courses or registrations via OLAT are not a valid substitute way of booking modules and are solely used for internal administrative purposes!

Cancelling Modules

Booking a module automatically registers you for the corresponding student assessment or exam. You are allowed to cancel a module, but only until the cancellation deadline.

Notification of Illness, Hindrance

In the event of illness or a compelling, unforeseeable and unpreventable reason for being unable to take an exam, you must submit your application to cancel the exam, including the required documents (e.g. a medical certificate), via the student portal using the tile “My applications”. Notifications about the processing of applications are sent electronical to your UZH e-mail address.

A written request to cancel the exam, together with an enclosed corresponding validation (e.g. medical certificate) can be submitted at the latest no more than five workdays after the assessment date. In cases of doubt (e.g. submission of medical excuse despite having taken the exam), the faculty may request a second opinion or an examination by a physician appointed by the university.

This enables you to retake an exam without having a fail (not passed) on your record.

Exam Dates

Exams generally take place during the final week of each semester. Dates for exams and repeat exams in the respective modules are published in the course catalogue. You do not have a right to defer an exam date.

Be present in the exam room at least 15 minutes before the exam starts.
You must be able to prove your identity, so always bring your UZH Card with you.

Not appearing for an examination is considered a failed attempt and is assessed as ‘failed’ or graded with a 1.

Repeat Exams

For compulsory and elective modules, the Department of Sociology offers repeat examinations in the same semester. You must register for the repeat exam independently via "My modules" in the student portal. Registration is possible if the regular exam was not passed or a deregistration (e.g. due to illness or exam overlap) was granted. To repeat in a later semester, a new booking of the corresponding module is mandatory. See also under Repeat Exams. The module must be rebooked to take a repeat assessment in a later semester.

There are no retakes of elective modules; such modules must be substituted. A failed elective module must be replaced by a different elective module. If an elective module is offered multiple times, it can be retaken once.

Exclusion

Whoever twice fails an exam in one of the compulsory modules will be barred from all subjects that contain that module as a mandatory module.
